Sunday was a good day. It was a welcomed change from the cold, muddy, gloomy atmosphere that is Serres Camp. The winter conditions are here. The weather has dropped below zero, the rain has begun, and the conditions in the camp have not improved. This made Sunday an even more meaningful day.
The local soccer team invited the camp residents to their soccer match. They were greeted with huge signs reading, “LET’S KICK RACISM OUT OF FOOTBALL!”, and “WE ARE ALL REFUGEES!”. I have truly never seen the residents happier than those few hours in the stadium. They were full of smiles and laughter, cheering on the team, and joining in the locals chants. It was truly a blessing for all of us. Thank you Serres.
